I've seen this topic alluded to in various sub-threads within particular brands. I'm not looking at brand-specific, but more or less to understand what everyone's philosophy/fade strategy is on their denim. - Do you wear one pair consistently or rotate multiple pairs?
- Are their certain pairs you are trying to fade faster than others?
- Is it possible that (gasp, can't believe I'm going to write this) - that we may have too many pairs to achieve a desired result?
No wrong answers, merely curious on the "strategies" implemented by the masses here. For example - I have 13 at the moment (with 2 inbound) and I tend to rotate maybe half at the moment. Some more than others see routine wear with the intent to fade them faster. I do have a couple of pairs that I'm not trying to fade as quickly, just for the deep indigo "dressed up" look when needed. I've got three that I am working hardest on (Japan Standard, American Sixteeners, and a Japanese organic). Probably going to add another to that "fast fade" batch. I've already sold off 6 pairs over the past year and try to donate/sell to keep the collection reasonable. I'm thinking some denim may get experimented with or set aside for future wear. Bonus question: what's been the hardest pair you've had to fade? I'd say my Cone Crosshatch. I probably need to put more time into them, but I think the lightweight and the crosshatch weave really haven't given me the promise of sick fades yet. Runner up: Italian BlackxBlack. This has been the one that reinforces the "Italians are a b*tch to fade" logic.

I'm of the wear one pair often school. I have six pairs of jeans, one is lightweight and one is heavy, with the rest in between. I also have the Italian bxb, which will probably never fade.
I aim for at least six months of fairly continuous wear before the first wash, unless the baby or some other disaster feels differently.
I have one pair that's well faded, my Oki's are getting pretty good and the rest look pretty new. I'll probably try to get at least one or two more pair into the somewhat faded category before buying something new, but the dark Kibata are calling my name.

I have 11 pairs right now and tend to go with 2 pairs in regular rotation that I try and fade. The two currently in rotation are my burgus plus 16 Oz mud-dyed weft - tough to fade but showing some sign of fading. Pair 2 are my Soso 21 Oz which i'm starting to wear more.
Most faded and comfortable are my lawless 15.5 Oz nehpu something or other and my oke standards.
I plan to add the beasts now that it's fall.

I basically wore 1 pair for 18 months straight before, but after everyone talked about this "rotation"- thing I started thinking and came to the conclusion it must be to air the pair for a day and it sounded like a good idea.Im still basically having one pair in the crosshairs but rotate two others atm.this means once or maximum twice a week i wear one of the other two. Then i have some crisp ones that gets used for special ocasions and a coupple heavy ones for cold weathers and light for warm weather. In the winter i beat on a new pair of heavies and if i like them they can stay with me for a year so im a little more flexible now.
I do think wearing one pair monogamously for six months will help bc you see how they will fade, like the loomies and even okayamas this really kicked in my desire to fade them and i wore the loomies for i think over a year so yeah definately wear every day if you can for as long as possible there just isnt anything Else you can do to get the sweet fades.

Step 1: put jeans on Step 2: wear jeans Step 3: wash as needed Step 4: repeat

brentkuz - that's just ridiculous - it makes too much sense. The real question is how do you, with more jeans than you need, decide your rotation - one pair for a period of time to fade or rotate a few....

The frustrating thing for me is once you've started to accumulate jeans you're faced with too much choice. Do I wear one pair for months straight or rotate several pair every week?

I need to start thinning the herd. I've got 3 more pairs I'm gonna send off to be hemmed. I've worn my TS over-dye indigos a few times but damnit, they turn my legs blue. My USDG's get worn once or twice a week. My Shadow selvedge never get worn for some reason. I wear 1 pair of Uniqlos regularly because I beat the sh*t out of them and they're my filthy work jeans. Once I get my other 3 jeans sent off for hemming I think I'm gonna donate some stuff to the thrift store.

Wear one pair for at least 6 months straight.
Acquire other pairs in the mean time.
Repeat for a few years.
Pull storage bin out from under bed because you're moving....find treasure trove of forgotten jeans.
Better than Christmas! (the 6 month pairs look pretty good too)

Just today when I got my Gustin V necks I was wearing the blueish one and I'm like "hmmm, what color jeans would go with these?". So I go through my stash and I'm like "oh, downtown browns look nice...ooo cone blacks look nice too, forgot about those...hey my grey Lawless jeans!...have I even worn these?..they look good with this shirt too"....ha

Im just thinking that from my lifestyle it takes atleast a year of everyday-wear to get ok fades on 1 par.
Rotate with 6 = 6 years Rotate with 10 = 10 years
You decide.

I really don't think about fading too much honestly. My zimbs look decent but they didn't really fade high contrast. When it gets cooler it's gonna be heavy denim time!

Bonus q: washed my herringbone workshirt today for the first time and have been wearing it everyday after work and some whole days during weekends omg i cannot see any faded creases! I saw babyfades before wash but now they are gone. I concur with the Italiens are a bitch to fade. Maybe i can see something under a microscope after its completely dry.

*bump*
since we're on the topic of wearing what we own I've decided to try and concentrate on rotating 2 pairs at a time. I've already got some nice fades on my Gustin American Standards but have since switched to my N&F Left Hand Twills and have been rotating between the two. The G American Standards probably have 4 months of wear with 1 soak and 1 machine wash, but the pocket fades and knee fades have set nicely. I'm even seeing fading around one of the rivets on the crotch. The N&F LHT's probably only have a couple of months of actual wear but the denim is nice and streaky and some of the light fades that are coming in are mostly stress areas that get a lot of friction, like back pockets, crotch, knees and front pockets.
what about you?

My Oni 575 are just starting to get baby fades, very slowly. But the saturated blue is starting to show some really cool electric blue in some wear areas. I'm out of them until fall though, gonna take years to get these looking worn, or moving to Nanavut.
My RgT 11oz are weird, fading fast in the upper block, phone and wallet fades, but nothing going on whiskers at all. Cuffs are super faded at the fold too. Fly is worn through at two buttons and really worn where the buttons hit. Pocket bags are about as dark as my wrl worn Cone Blue Lines. Off that they through off tons of indigo, but don't seem to really show much wear.
Gustin Italy BxB have minimal whiskers and pocket fades with just a hint of wear in the upper top block. Oki are getting really good, but the straight cut doesn't work for me, so I haven't been wearing them much recently. Plus they're hot so they're in storage til fall.
Incoming Ciano Anniversary are gonna be intentionally gut bustingly tight, hoping for some stretch, but the weight will likely keep them mothballed until fall.

I tried to make a bare minimum wardrobe and so had only the Zimbabwe 15 and downtown brown for about 8 months. I couldn't help getting the Japan 21s and RTxBOW expeditions though so ended up with 3 pairs of indigo and 1 brown. The Zimbs are the hardest faders by far but are paying off finally after a full year of exclusive wear. The 21s made it in during the cold months but will soon go back to the drawer. When I wear through these 4 I plan to limit myself to 1 indigo, 1 brown and 1 IxI, since I don't do black jeans.

If you want them to resemble jeans throughout their life make sure you find some with contrast stitching. How are the dtbs looking with some wear?

I had to wash them a few months ago and boy did they shrink. They also got some wierd vertical fades in the wash. They still look good but are a little too skinny for my taste. I'm going to try to wear them a bit over the summer to see if they relax again. If not, I may have to sell them and grab another pair. Speaking of brown denim, I saw a pair of super slub Browns in the stock store. It's weird because they haven't been around for years. I think the fabric looks amazing but have never seen fit pics or even just a pair sewn up. Anyone here have them?
