Just wanted to throw this out there. My no means am I a rookie when it comes to the car scene.
Vehicle in question: 2015 silverado 1500 LS V8 3.42 gears Double cab Custom package Tow package Rear defroster, wheel locks MSRP 38,999 Price offered $31,833
Vehicle to trade 2008 cadillac sts V6 108,000mile 7 out of 10 normal daily driver issues Trade value from dealer $8000
Pro: 4wd daily driver for the north east Truck bed for home duties (I own a house and plan on moving in 4-5year) Towing! New car warranty, reliability etc.
Con: Basically $23,000 out of pocket plus around $2000 in tax, paperwork, fees etc. I would put my trade and 10k down on the car so around a 15k loan. Taxes yearly will be higher since RI is socialist and I pay $38 per $1000 of vehicle worth for tax. $1400 a year or $1000 extra tax bill a year.
The cadillac really hasn't given me issues too bad at all besides a few issues here and there. Right now I drive a 95 wrangler in the winter for snow storms but it's a 95 wrangler so they are built like a rust bucket. Got me around though.

Buy it if you can afford it. There's some value in having a vehicle that will get you to and from work, safely and on time. Get rid of the wrangler also. It'll save you a little on tax, ins, repairs, which may offset the increase in gas.

Yeah I mean getting there isn't the problem it's just snow. I have to go to work no matter what. The wrangler got me to work in the hight of the blizzards last year. 18" snow no problem.
Summer I have my harley, corvette, miata as well to get me there.

So I'd look for a clean, low mileage 2013 or 2014 that hits all the same points for you. You'll save on the truck and on the taxes, you won't deal with the instant depreciation, and new vehicles generally just work, so you'll be able to put 150-200k miles on it without an issue anyway. I used to be a new car guy, I wanted to be the one to break it in a get it dirty the first time, etc etc. but it's just a car. It gets you to and from where you need to go. I love cars, but they are functional tools. Save a few grand and buy more denim.

I agree with buying a well taken care of Used vehicle. Problem is these 1-3 year old trucks are holding there value. I guess shop it around, see if you can find a good used deal.

Yeah and 2016s are starting to show up, so dealers need to deal and get rid of them. So maybe wait for a few more months and see if they still have a 15 left in November. Then you will get a steal.

They usually try to either give you a fair deal on your trade in, and hold some gross, or give you all the rebates, but try to give you less on the trade in. Did you email all the dealerships in the area, even out of area, and price them against each other, without talking about a trade in?

Yeah, no more brand new cars for me (for the most part). Let someone else eat the depreciation. Get a clean, newer warranted used baby. You won't regret it. Is new car smell worth $10-$15k? Not to me.

Not to me. Only speaking for trucks they are holding value very well first 5-6 years. A used 2013 with 50k on the clock is still getting decent prices.

I've talked to a few Chevrolet dealers and balise seems to has some of the best deals.

Still got a Toyo certified unit, 34k miles, totally serviced and owned by an older San Diego woman with services done at every point and logged into Toyo's system. It was literally like new. I saved $10k over new. They're out there - took me a good long time to get the one I wanted. Trucks are everywhere. You can find a great deal I'm sure.

My buddy traded in his FJ for nothing....they completely screwed him. The cat went bad and he was nervous that more stuff was gonna go wrong. Dealer talked to him and basically told him "well 100k miles is when everything starts to go! Better off load that!" And now he has a 47k GMC truck on lease.
I can fix stuff up as well. I do all my maintenance stuff on my vette and miata.

A dealer might give you a decent deal, or give you a better sense of comfort about "certified used" or a warranty or something, but if you hunt around on craigslist or ebay you can find good clean cars for a song (and truck too I'm sure, but my personal experience is with cars). My current car I bought 4 years ago off craigslist. I took it to a mechanic (who I had a relationship with already) and paid him like $200 to do a full inspection - which I did with him. Took ~2.5 hours to look at everything. In the end I got the car I wanted for $5k less then any certified used I could find. So a little investment up front really helped. Oh and get a carfax on it too. Once again, pretty cheap investment to help give yourself a greater sense of comfort.

Tokyo's run forever - and that's if you do nominal maintenance on them. 100k is broken in barely, and aside from a coolant change and a new serpentine belt, it should then go basically another 100k with nothing more than basic stuff. But you have to remember that lots of FJ's are used as crawlers and get the shit beat out of them - abused to the hilt. Gotta look out for that of course, but an FJ crapping out like that is not in any way normal...

There was an issue with some earlier models and the driveshaft. Mine had an issue and a $1200 repair cost me zip. That was well worth going to the dealer for. OTOH, yes, you can find amazing cherry deals on craig's. Ive found a few bikes over the years that were just stupid buys!

I think it all depends on a person's experience with cars in general and buying and selling of them. I have been a used car guy letting others take the depreciation hit as mentioned.
I usually buy a car with about 70,000 miles on it which for a good car is nothing. I drive it till about 140-150,000 sell it to a private person and usually buy from a private person.
I do know some people like to have brand new with all of the factory warranty etc. It costs more but some are willing to pay for that security.
I do research on the specific car I am buying, looking at any history of problems etc. Also try to buy a one or two owner car hopefully with maintenance records.
Has worked well for me so far, knock on wood.

Not buying new. I'll sell my wrangler on CL and find a mid 2000's pickup truck chevy or gmc. I do need a 4wd pickup for house chores and stuff. They just didn't work with me enough.
Hopefully get a solid truck. Fix some minor stuff if needed and happy winter driving.
I have bought from a dealer once and never again.

You clearly need a Defender 110 hardtop with a winch and a shovel. Buy high and sell low (to me) in a few years.
