So, what's the best phone for non-US travel and takes the best pictures? IPhone or some form of Samsung?

I had an iPhone 3 and then detoured for a few years into Android, buying the "pure" Android phones directly from Google, with mostly positive results up to the Nexus 5 which I had nothing but problems with.
I've had an iPhone 6 for a while now and am totally satisfied.

I think you can't go wrong with either the iPhone or Galaxy for a camera phone. I've owned an iPhone 4s, HTC One, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I'm due for an upgrade, and I've been trying to talk myself into going back to iPhone, but I don't want to leave the comfort of Android for iTunes. Debating between the Note 5, S7 Edge, or the next iPhone (6s?). I think I'll probably go with the S7 Edge.

i visited 9 countries last year and was very happy that i was using t-mobile at the time. i had free data and texting during the entire trip and wifi calling whenever i needed to actually speak to someone. i'm partial to the windows phone platform, so of course was carrying a nokia phone (925 at the time) which has a fantastic camera.
my current work phone(s) are a nokia icon (camera not as high quality) and a motorola droid turbo which has a pretty nice camera

I stay with my phone until it basically dies. Then I pick up a like new used phone for my next one Craigslist or Ebay. That means I don't have a current phone but that's fine with me. I think it's crazy having to keep up with what is current with a phone when what you already have usually works fine.
I will buy a discounted phone when it comes time to renew as we have two lines and then I will usually sell it and keep the money.
I have a Galaxy s4 mini now. I like it a lot. I don't like too big of a phone. Cameras decent not as good as a good actual camera of course.
I have been with Verizon forever and am grandfathered in to unlimited data so that comes in handy. I'm usually on Wi-Fi but it is nice for trips etc.

No love for the LG? I've got the newest LG and I'm happy with it. I used to love LG phones then jumped ship to HTC for my last two. Do you have the LG G4? My contract renwal phone is due 3rd September so I have just under a month to decide what to go with next. As it stands, I'm toying between the G4 or the HTC M9. A couple of my friends went with the LG G3 and the screen knocked me out - it's crystal clear.

That definitely will pay for another used phone and more. It is definitely worth the effort. People go through some great lengths to take advantage of things like that. I have learned a few things on some of the cell phone forums. It's kind of crazy I could have sold my unlimited data plan for over $500. Not sure what they're selling for now. People want the unlimited data when they don't have Internet where they live etc. Some good info about phones on here. www.howardforums.com

The screen on the G4 is even better than the screen on the G3, at least that's what the salesperson told me. I'm not a gadget dude and I dont care about having the latest and greatest tech gear, but a couple months ago I went in to upgrade my phone as my eyes are getting worse the older I get now and I'm pretty sure I need glasses. I walked in and told the lady I want a phone with a nice sized, crystal clear screen and she immediately walked me over to the LG G4. They had just gotten it in a few days prior and she said even if you forget the screen clarity and size she would still recommend the LG G4 to anyone who walked in. She said it's a better phone than the latest I phone and the Galaxy, etc...and began to explain to me why but I didn't really understand what she was telling me...lol. I was already sold, I said you had me at "look how clear this screen is".

bugula - I hear moto specializes in loomstate, gauzy and crisp at first but buttery soft after 50 calls that develop excellent pocket fades phones

Could just be time for the reading glasses. Happens to most everyone as we age. I had never needed glasses in my life till about 5 years ago. Was kind of a pain at first but I'm getting used to it. The good thing is they're fairly inexpensive can pick them up most anywhere. Start with the lowest magnification and see if that is good enough. I usually have four pair so I have one in my car at home at work etc. I had 2 prescription pairs but lost both of them. One of my eyes is better than the other for reading but the cheap ones work fine also. I'm tempted to get one of the holders so you can have them dangling from your neck all the time like the librarians and teachers always seem to have. Not a bad idea to get an eye exam though. They check for glaucoma etc. also

LG fan here. I had a Nexus 5 which developed the common fatal battery fault, so got the LG G3. It's better in every respect, especially with the expandable memory and good camera. The G4 is meant to be even better yet, so it's on my amazon price watch list. Only $30 more to go before I buy it.

I just don't know that I want to take it with me overseas. Especially now that the new 2015 Moto X is even bigger than the 2014, if I lose the one I have, I'll be SOL.

I bought a Xiaomi Redmi 2, new, from Xiaomi, for about $100.. I bought it after my Galaxy S5 died after getting wet (the damn thing was supposed to be water resistant) and I cracked the screen on my wife's old Note 3. I bought it to tide me over until something really nice came out, but now find myself loving this phone and eagerly waiting for Xiaomi's next flagship phone.
The Redmi 2 is awesome.. Especially for the price. They're not easy to get in the States, but, for the international traveller, they're inexpensive and impressively spec'ed out, for the price. They are dual SIM ready and easy to root, too.
I have a T-Mobile plan that gets me free international data roaming, Google voice number, and a local SIP account in Singapore that uses only data. Basically, all three numbers ring this phone and use only either WiFi, T-Mobile's data when I'm not in Singapore, or Singtel data when I'm in Singapore. Total cost is my T-Mobile US bill + $20 for data only service in Singapore.
I have CM11 running on my Redmi 2, but the stock system is supposed to be pretty good.

I ended up ordering a used iPhone 5 (32gb). It should support enough of the Euro phone bands that it should work for me on T-Mo from Switzerland to Netherlands and the camera is still one of the best. I did look into the Redmi, but ordering from the US is a pain, so I just opted for the easy Amazon out.
