Enlighten me? What is a hipster? The term has been around since the Beat Generation, in "On the road" Kerouac used it a ton speaking about the guys in frisco.

A rich hippie that's annoying as hell? Someone who uses the word "irony" like Vizzini uses "inconceivable"?
(any excuse to link a glove 'n boots video, heh)

Waxed mustache, non-baseball hat, fixed gear bike with a flat handlebar, PBR. The more the merrier.

I can't even drink PBR ironically. My beer tastebuds would feel betrayed.

I could define a hipster for you guys but it would require references to music and clothes that are kind of obscure, you probably haven't heard of them and might not understand.
Talking like THAT is a hipster to me lol. Pretentious. Trust funds. Williamsburg. Looks awkwardly different on purpose, does things no one else does and then abandons them as soon as the mainstream picks it up. It's the Internet era version of trendy kids except they have to flip their style every month instead of year because everything blows up and gets popular so fast.
I think the term has lost all real meaning actually, everyone uses it and means somthing slightly different from person to person.

Those guys stole fixed gear trainers from regular old uptight road cyclists but I think it's almost so uncool with them now that it might be safe to go back out this winter....with drop bars and a front brake. I sold all my old shitty road bike stuff for a killing on ebay a few years back to kids building "fixies". An old Campagnolo stem that was not worth the aluminum it was forged from was suddenly rare and classic. I wasn't complaining. And goddammit I used to steal PBR from my dad so they aren't taking that one away from me. I do remember seeing it on tap at a too cool for school bar in San Francisco about ten years ago and thinking wtf is going on here....only 4 bucks a pint bwahahaha

I think the term has lost all real meaning actually, everyone uses it and means somthing slightly different from person to person. This. Another sliding scale label. You're always a bit more hipster than someone and a lot less hipster than others. No one admits to being a hipster while often pointing out others...

Probably unsurprising, but my first experience of PBR was in Portland. Given it was a hot, sunny day and the beer was ice-cold, it actually made a (literally) refreshing change from the '3x more hops than it should have, plus 2x more hops than that because another company's just done it' approach of many of the craft ales that were available.
I kind of see all of those types of beers: PBR, High Life, Rainier etc. as a little like a Coke. Sometimes it's just the best tool for the job.

I went on a date with a girl recently who accused (yes i said accused) me of being a hipster. Her primary evidence was my socks and bracelets. But then she was mad (yes I said mad) that I don't have any tattoos.
There was not a second date. This girl was a kook.

We have a saying here in the PNW if you claim to not know what a hipster looks like you probably are one! The two main types of Hipsters I see in the Pacific North West. mainly Seattle/Portland. Are the under 30 dudes that wear the sock/stocking at in the middle of summer. click the links to see what I an referring to. link link And second type usually in their mid 20's to late 30's most sport a beard or old fashion waxed mustache, has tattoos, and wears goofy little hats that where popular in the 1900's . link link link
Another trend I have been seeing lately are that some of the hipster dudes wearing work wear type clothing that are spotless. Work boots, Jackets, Work Shirts Work pants. That have never seen a hard days work. And I am willing to bet if these guys ever did get mud on their spotless "Work Clothes" they would freak out. Also as a generalization the hipster dudes I know like to hang out in little dive bar/Taverns and like to drink Rainer,Olympia,Hamms Beer. or some esoteric micro brew beer that only a few people know of.
