Too small all around, or just the waist? What did the waist measure out as? Too small all around. Using G method I got about 32.25 The thighs are super tight, can't even button the second button.

Got my Ciano jeans today and they are way too small. 32 G 30 Ciano. Looking at the fit guide online it seemed 30 would be the right fit. I must not be measuring correctly. Do G and Ciano measure differently? Anyway, since he is the man, Ciano is remaking me some jeans in a bigger size. Based on this thread it seems I should go for a 32 in Ciano, but that would be a 35 inch waist pre shrink and my true waist is only 33.25 I'd need to see more measurements to know, but if we're talking denim, I'd probably go 31, canvas 32. As I've said, my 32 slim came in a bit trimmer in the legs than a Gustin 33slim, so it is my guess that a 32 straight or 33 slim would be ideal for me, and about the same as my Gustin slims. I haven't washed them yet.

I think I need a 32 Ciano with the waist cut to a 33 not 35 lol.

I don't have them yet, but am hoping I did the sizing correctly. One thing to note with the thigh measurement is that G measures 2" down and CF measures 1" down. That's a pretty big difference.

Seems like sizing down 1 or 2 tagsize from G is working for most, and with the slim they will be slimmer then G slim. Sound perfect. Now i just need to figure out one or two down.

I am a 33 slim in G and my Texas lot #2 denim were a 34 waist, 901 fit. Waist was spot on with my G, the thighs were comparable with the G slim, and the openings were actually just a tiny bit larger at 7 1/2" (vs the 7 1/4" of G). Front rise on the CF was about 9 3/4" (compared to most of my G's at 10").
I know this doesn't help your consensus, but it pays to have the details depending on what denim you are considering.

I'm looking at Cianos fit guide in relation to Gustins.
The numbers show that Gustins slim should be slimmer than Cianos.
For instance I'm a 33 slim in Gustin and the jeans are a half size too big in waist and thigh. Cianos not actual size 32 slims are labeled as 12.5 in the thighs vs Gustins 11.45 thighs.
If Cianos are slimmer than Gustins the math doesn't seem to add up as Cianos jeans ought to be 2in wider in the thigh.
Also, I don't really understand Cianos shrink measurements. They are sanforized so shrink shouldn't be a big factor, no?
I do notice on thigh measurements that Gustin measures 2in down from crotch whereas Ciano measures 1in down. Does this make a huge difference?

Does this make a huge difference? I'm sort of going through your points backwards, but yes, the point on the thigh makes a big difference given the pretty aggressive taper at that point on the typical 5-pocket cut. You should be able to get the equivalent off of your Gustins, though, by measuring 1" down like Ciano on your Gustin 33 slim. The place that I really noticed a difference (in same actual size comparisons) between the Gustin slim and the Ciano slim is in the rise, and they generally feel slimmer, which is probably a good thing for you, depending on how you're doing between the knee and the ankle on Gustin. If they're tight through the calf, I recommend either sizing up the Ciano slim or switching to the straight. The Ciano shrink guidelines are based on an actual wash or soak of the fabric. "Raw" sanforized denim most definitely shrinks, though it tends to be in the 1-2% range as opposed to upwards of 5% for unsanforized and loomstate -- also keep in mind that less resistance over the length of the run means the inseam will shrink more than the waist, and while I've seen waist shrinkage be fairly minimal, I've never seen less than 1" lost in the inseam on any pair of unwashed denim. To put all that gobbledygook simply, I wear a 33 slim (though lately I've just been ordering 34 slim so they're easier on the hips) in Gustin, and have a pair of 32 slim from Ciano. if the Gustin slim is already a slim fit on you, I'd recommend the Ciano straight fit. If the Gustin slim is loose in most places, especially the calf, and the rise is higher than you like, then the slim fit is going to be great. Given what you're describing above, depending on fabric, I'd say you're better off sizing down in the straight. If all this is more than you want to think about and you don't mind spending a little more money, find a great fitting pair of jeans, thrown them in a box or an envelope and send them to Ciano, asking him to develop a custom pattern for you off of them -- though if you're just looking for a one-off pair of jeans from him this is cost prohibitive.

I've ordered some custom 23oz and Ciano says the pattern is on the way soon. I ordered them extra tight and will probably need to loosen up the thighs (10.7) for the real deal.
Are you saying that Gustins are a higher back rise? I still don't see how a 12.5in thighs can be slimmer than 11.45in even if measured from an inch closer to the crotch, at least not yet.

Are you asking me to go measure my jeans to prove that I don't know how they fit when I'm wearing them? If I'm saying all these things from experience and you're doubting me, go measure your jeans and let me know I'm wrong. Regardless of the numbers you get, it won't change the fact that my 32 slim Ciano jeans are slimmer with a lower rise than all of my Gustin 33 slims. If you're doing a custom pattern my experience doesn't matter anyway, I don't know why you'd order a custom pattern and then request the same size as the fit guide.

I don't doubt you at all, just wrapping my head around things. I don't think you're wrong either. I appreciate the stuff you've said.
What do you mean by requesting the same size as the fit guide? I'm guessing when my custom pattern comes in they'll be too tight in the thighs for me... if not it'll be close to too tight.

A custom pattern is where you request the specific measurements, they develop a pattern, and then sew your jeans around that. If you were to order a custom pattern that matches the measurements of one of the existing cuts (the slim, I can never remember if it's 901 or 905), which would be a match to the pair I have since I didn't get a custom pattern, it would be a waste of the $68 or whatever he is charging for custom pattern right now. How did you go about getting the measurements you supplied for the custom pattern?

Oh, I was saying the thighs on my order are currently set for 10.7in until I get the pattern in and it's too tight (especially since Ciano is 1in closer to the crotch in thigh measurements).

I don't want to be a harbinger of doom, and I really wish you the best, but that sounds like it's going to be extremely painful in 23oz even if you do squeeze into them.

I already see my error. Might need to change it to like an 11.2 or more. Other measurements are actual waist: 35 front rise: 10 back rise: 14 knee: 8 cuff: 7.1

Thanks for this thread guys, I switched my 31's to a 32 - 901 cut. I wear a 34 slim in Gustin, normally prefer a 34.5 waist with a 12 inch thigh so we will see.

I got my custom fit sample in. Luckily, Ciano didn't even follow my directions on the thigh because I asked for something way off (I blame my gustin greenlines being out of spec).
Alright they came in at waist: 35 inseam: 35 fr: 10 3/4 br: 14 1/4 thigh: 11 5/8 knee: 8 1/2 hem open: 7 3/4
I requested adjustments to thigh and hem opening. I think a 12 max in the thigh is a slim fit. I still want a smaller hem opening at 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 max. The knee at 8 1/2 seems fine as long as that doesn't get bigger.

cassaruby - what did you request on the thigh? Did we talk about this before? Edit: it was right in my face when I hit submit... They may not have been able to physically bridge the difference to 10.7 from a 35+ waist. I'm sure he'd be happy to explain it if you give him a call.

Yes, please! Pre and post measurements would be greatly appreciated. My pair of 12oz lost an inch, in both waist, and inseam with hot wash, and dry. 18oz lost 1/2 inch in waist, and inseam, with cold wash, and hang dry. This is the answer was looking for. So if I get chinos, I would likely do a hot wash. I was trying to figure this out as I was assuming that not much shrinkage would occur with the duck.

The reason I did a cold wash, and hang dry with my 18oz pair is that it came with about an inch shorter inseam, and I didn't want to loose any on the length.

Have you sized these so you don't have to cuff? And how have they softened up? 18oz just seems so daunting in Duck, like it would never loosen up. OTOH I have a 20 some year old carhartt that is pretty soft now.
