Yes, they are. The combination of bacteria, sweat and dirt act as a sandpaper and wear down the cotton fibers. Big negative... marauder your wrong... everyone knows they're caused by spontaneous explosions from the crotch, a common side-effect of not showering for long periods of time. or by this: ps.. I like the thought of Jack White being an old promiscuous lady.

I take it the pair on the right are the washed pair? The washed pair seem to have more contrasting fades and looks better to me. How long you go before your first wash and how they are washed is a big contributor to fades. Machine, hand, etc. Also how they are dried. Dryer/air Not really enough info given to really know how they were washed/not washed. The type of fabric makes a huge difference also. Nothing to get to wound up about. We can all do what we want with our jeans. They don't have feelings.

I've worn a pair for a whole year without a wash a no crotch blowouts From what I have seen certain people/body types seem to be more prone to this than others. However dirty fibers have been proven to wear out quicker than clean. Carpets are a good example. Manufacturers recommend cleaning them, especially traffic areas otherwise you get traffic wear lines. Believe it or not The Raw denim article above specifically states one of the crotch blow out reasons is Not washing your denim.

It's more body shape and life style. I find I get wear quick in the crotch. Motorcycles do not help at all.

So your not actually speaking from experience... Just regurgitating what you read... You probably put your jeans in the freezer too... Weird because if yo look at the picture the jeans that were washed look like they have crotch blow-out while the unwashed pair look way better in terms of crotch wear...

After 6 hours in my super heavies I noticed a good amount of indigo rub in the crotch. It's a mixture how you walk and i would think your hip geometry.

I just buy the stuff, and wear it, plain and simple. To me, there is really nothing to argue about. When I was a kid, Levis still made good quality jeans, all made in the US, and from riding bikes, climbing trees, building forts, etc, and they would blow-out the crotch, knees, you name it. Mom would toss them out when she didn't want to look at them anymore, and buy me some new ones. I wear cycling shorts now, don't play on my knees much, haven't built a fort since I don't know when, and my jeans last way longer. I also wash them from time to time. For myself, thats about as indepth as I'll get on this subject.

For myself, thats about as indepth as I'll get on this subject. i'm guessing (and could be wrong) denimdon was referring to claims about how washing or not washing may impact fabric wear...how bacteria, dirt, hydration, etc may or may not play a role in degradation. many of the pairs we see being discussed in these matters are pairs that have been worn daily for a year +/-...while many of us here have enough pairs that get rotated through that they don't see the same type of wear. it's an interesting discussion, but not one i see worth getting overly wrapped up in science about. as with most things...the wear/tear/level of gross will vary person to person. size/shape/environment/physiology, etc...will all play a role. someone commuting by bike will get more road grime, sweat, and crotch wear than someone riding in a car to/from the office. i've even noticed that switching to public transport in the last year has had a noticeable change in the wear on my clothing. i wash my jeans when they seem like they need washed...but can't say that i've ever noticed them getting to a level of 'stink'. maybe if i was sweating profusely, going commando, and spilling food on them regularly...but for the most part smell has never played much of a role.

One of the advantages of being a fairly clumsy person is that it's pretty close to inevitable that I will spill or smear or splatter something on my jeans or sit in something or brush up against something or otherwise get them dirty LONG before they would ever start to smell bad solely from accumulated grime and body stank. So mine tend to get washed early and often. I am okay with this, as I am firmly in the "these are pants, not a wearable piece of art" camp. Though I hasten to add that there's certainly nothing wrong with feeling differently about one's jeans. Such is the spice of life.

For those of you who wash regularly. Do you find that the Denim (in this case heavy 21oz) softens up the more you wash?

I think my black x coal and American Sixteener have about the same number of washes (since I was trying to get the sulphur smell out -- before I knew that the sun is the magic pill) and the sixteeners are definitely softer. The reason I share is that I think it has more to do with the wear you put into them than the washing, the washing tends to soften up the dye saturation more than the fabric. I'm having trouble wearing my 20oz because they sound like snowboarding pants and I'm working in a quiet office -- I get self-conscious.

I've got about 30 wears in the Gustin J21's and though they fit nicely and are Much easier to wear then the BEAST, they are still not an easy wear compared to my other jeans in the 14-16oz weight class Now I have a pair of the CF anniversary jeans (20oz) coming. Not expecting those to be an easy wear either. I may wash the Gustin regularly (weekly) and no washes for the CF. I'm just tired of Breaking in jeans. Maybe I should just wear my Ok's all the time.?

G Oki's? Hottest jeans I own. Warmer than my Oni 22's. Tight weave just makes them hot. I'm hoping the Ciano Anniversary are fairly loose, as I sized down in the hopes of getting some stretch. I don't find washing makes jeans any softer, aside from knocking startch out of some pairs that are overly starchy, like my Oki were. Wear softens things up, my RgT are like pajamas and my Gustin Italian BxB are softer than jeans really have a right to be.

The more I wash my 666XHS, absolutely the more soft and wearable they become.

I think I should be washing my jeans more often as most of the holes/stains are from my work as a chemist. Plus the fact I know I sweat a lot and my girlfriend says you need to wash those smelly jeans.
I wonder if i can start selling my used jeans as the real acid washed/destroyed jeans hah.

"Other jeans wish they could look like these jeans"...i think my jeans have better character lol, but that hem with the frays looks terrible to me. I should undercut his sales and sell my jeans for 40 shipped.
