Cool Material posted this. I don't really agree with all the "a real man should _____" articles, but thought it might be a decent discussion piece that doesn't involve Gustin's shoes or Lawless' wait times. They've phrased it as "see how many you can check off the list", but I don't know if that's the most interesting way to look at it. Without further ado: 50 Things Every Man Should Own.

I can't debate it. I only can inventory and plan for my spend once my 90 day hiatus is up.

Got all of those except a knit tie and slippers, not sure I want either any way.

When I first started reading it I saw picture one and said "an Aston Martin?! You've gotta be kidding me!", but then read "a suit that fits".

Got all of those except a knit tie and slippers, not sure I want either any way. In that case you might as well get yourself a knit tie and see how you feel about it. I guess I should offer some more discussion points other than the article, however. First, I don't have the following: 8. Knit Tie 13. Secret Ingredient for cooking 15. Navy Blazer 20. Zippo (never smoked, never saw the need to walk around smelling like lighter fluid) 24. Bathrobe (hate) 25. Slippers (hate) 27. Proper Stationery 40. Go-to Cookbook 46. Full Size Umbrella Second... Several people comment "if you need any of that stuff you're not a man"... to that point, it's "should", not "needs to", so there's that. However, are there things on the list that you disagree with, or that you've had and gotten rid of, or that you've been eyeing a particular piece for but haven't committed to purchase yet? Are there things that aren't on the list that you think should be. There's a dude that travels the world and all his possessions he keeps in a steamer trunk that he takes with him everywhere. Do you think you could take these 50 things and travel the world with them?

and one further angle. feel free to tell any stories or provide pictures of your favorite items on the list. The watch you wouldn't want to live without, the pocket-knife you've had since your grandfather gave it to you, do you have a storage unit full of so much cash you can't possibly launder all of it before you die (hey, they used the Breaking Bad image)?

Don't have: 6. Watch - because I haven't been willing to spend the ~$3k+ it would take to get a watch that I would actually want at this point 8. Knit tie - never liked them 20. Zippo - see exophobe above 24. Bathrobe - when the hell am I going to wear a bathrobe and not feel like a tool? 25. Slippers - ditto

I smoke a cigar about once a year. Used to smoke more, but came to my senses. Also use it for lighting other things. Also have some female friends that smoke and it's just polite to help them kill themselves sooner.
I have my grandfather's pocket knife. He died in the Pacific in WWII, so it's pretty cool to have. It's tiny and not stainless, so I don't really use it. I carry a Helle folder for assualting my mail and when biking, kayaking or rock climbing.
I have an umbrella I keep in the car, I prefer a rain jacket, but have learned the hard way that it's hard to keep a baby in a car seat dry with a rain jacket, or at least it's hard to keep a baby and yourself dry with those things.
I've travelled a lot for pleasure and work and can handle up to two weeks with my messenger bag. If I pack a pair of jeans and sneakers and fly in a suit or a blazer and chinos, I can fit my dopp kit, a few shirts and my full size headphones and electric adaptors plus the other odds ans ends. I just try to use the hotel dry cleaning or find a laundromat over the weekend. If it's a longer trip, or I'm biking and need my helmet, shoes and pedals, I tend to add my trusty Eagle Creek duffel.
Coworkers are always confused when I carry on with only a messenger bag and they've got enough to fill a small Cesna.

I daily a Sinn 856 that was $1,500 many years ago. There are all kinds of German (Sinn, Damasko, Nomos, Archimede, Stowa and countless others) and Swiss watches for less money. Many use standard ETA movements, but so do many of the big brands. In house movements are cool, but certainly not necessary.

A navy blazer is a must unless you are in the middle of the sticks and never have to attend any type of function at all. Heck even the small function hall mid 40 yo second wedding I went to people wore blazers.

Bathrobes are awesome man. Gotta get one and try it out. Lazy weekend morning. I workout at 6pm, eat dinner like 730 shower after that. Jump in the bathrobe after shower and sit around before bed.

2. Don't own a coffee table, so no need for a book. If I do, I'll probably buy this one. It's friggin hilarious.
8. Not really into knit ties, but I can see myself buying one just to try them out. Bought this Berg & Berg tie off of Massdrop that I'm waiting for. Drop completed on May 29th. Any day now I should receive it.
11. I'm not a picture person, so I find my phone's camera sufficient.
14. I love my Keurig, and I'll never give her up!
20. I quit smoking over a year ago after more than a decade of smoking a pack a day. No substitutes, no cigars, no hookah since. Tossed all my Zippos, about a dozen, in the process, and sold my prized Dupont.
21. Need to pick one up, but plan on putting it on the wedding registry.
22. Always carry cash with me, but I wouldn't consider it a stash (always have a $100 in mixed bills).
24. No thanks.
27./28. Probably not.
33. No thanks.
41. I've been looking into this, but haven't found anything I really liked.
exophobe: surprised you don't have a navy blazer. I have almost as many navy blazers as I do indigo denim.

When I first started reading it I saw picture one and said "an Aston Martin?! You've gotta be kidding me!", but then read "a suit that fits". My car goal is a Tesla by the end of next year, but I'm also saving up for a wedding/20% down payment for a townhouse, so probably not gonna happen.

Good to see they endorse Gibbs's Rule #9. I've never watched NCIS <snarky comment removed>, but knives are a damn convenient thing to have on you at all times*. * except in airports. they make you throw that shit away or step out of line to go mail it to yourself.

I used vantage v8 is do able. I've been looking at 2009 maserati granturismo S lately. Getting the itch. Or a 996 porsche turbo.
I don't have stationary or a coffee table book or a few of the other things. But man slippers and bathrobes are awesome.

My neighbor has a 997TT that's just so much better looking, but still no 993. The 996 GT3 is more appealing to me though, just add French yellow lights and call it a day.

For the price of a 996TT you can do the front end face lift cheap.

For the price of a 996TT you can do the front end face lift cheap. True, but you're still stuck with that horrid interior. I've tried to consider a 996 as a daily, but keep coming back to a BRZ over it. I need to pay more attention to 997.2 prices, but I'm pretty sure they're still higher than my budget and I'd prefer a Cayman anyway, but need the back "seat."
