So I've been looking for a decent jacket for autumn/winter for a while; I did buy a Pointer chore coat but was a bit disappointed with the construction quality and the weight of the material. I was planning on getting a Buzz Rickson N-1 but decided it was overkill (I tend to get very hot very easily, so will often wear a t-shirt even if it's 10 degrees (Celsius) outside), so am now on the lookout for a very good quality jacket in the rough mould of a chore coat.
Any suggestions? I know Ciano makes some great stuff but I'd like it by November as I plan on going away. American or Japanese brands are fine, but I've got no idea beyond Post O'Alls/Pointer/Tellason USA wise. The cooler the details the better!

I already have it, I was disappointed! Maybe I got a dud (bought it on eBay brad new) as the buttons seemed as if they could pop off if buttoned up. Having said that, it's good for the price; is it rare to get something that much thicker in duck? I guess maybe I should look for a wool jacket? I just don't trust Gustin with regards to sizing. I've been tempted a few times through eBay but the jackets seem a bit dull. whiskeyriver, bruns's issue with Ciano is the timescale, as it won't be ready by November. I wear my Ciano Car Coat to work most days. I have a couple of G ones too, but the Ciano is so substantial that I like wearing it because I can rub it against anything with fear of damaging it. I can't imagine what a lined 18oz one would be like. Bulletproof, I guess.

I'm still a big fan of the freenote, even though I can't get over the price. One thing I would warn, however, given the "get very hot very fast" and looking for something slightly heavier comments: waxed canvas is a terrible insulator, and as an unlined jacket by itself doesn't tend to be versatile through many different kinds of weather -- if it's really cold you feel like you're wearing no jacket at all, and if it's slightly warm you feel like a baked potato in the oven. As a layering piece, though, they're great. As an example, a waxed jacket with a warm hoodie underneath is a great combination, so if by going away you mean traveling, as long as you plan accordingly that might be exactly what you're looking for if you just want something to sort of "weatherproof" a hoodie. |

Good advice. I think of cotton as effectively useless for a jacket. Wool, down and leather all win over any form of cotton.
Plus cotton tends to take up more space when traveling.

I have a Fidelity CPO that I wore a fair bit last winter but have since grown out of; I actually wore it a lot more than the peacoat I got at the same time. Only qualm for me was that it was a bit on the dull side, though that did mean it went with virtually everything. |

I'm gonna make a very big assumption here and guess he lacks the machinery that would allow him to make a standard button fastener |

If he's doing those on his own that's awesome, I hadn't heard of the brand before. To chime in on the coat, The zipper/snap combo is pretty good for versatility, you can snap it if it's not too cold, zipper it if it's a bit colder, and then if it's windy the flap snapping down over the zipper is one of the best things in the damn world. If I remember right this is how the army issue M65 is/was, but @brentjuz has a real one so he can probably confirm/deny. Mine was surplus that I got in the 90s new, and I'm thinking I'm gonna need to go find out if I still have it. I had a pea-coat from about the same time but the inside of that thing was shredded. |

One is OrnHansen and they're having a chore coat made and the other is the Ginew USA riders jacket I posted in the outerwear thread. The OrnHansen coat does nothing for me because it's just another chore coat that doesn't look any different than The Pointer brand stuff, but the Ginew rider's jacket looks pretty cool to my eyes because it's an interesting combo of the trucker/moto jacket. But, that one's $400 and is venturing into Freenote Cloth territory. Either way, I think the Tomahawk coat looks pretty cool and like it's built like a brick sh*thouse. At 18oz it must be damn near bullet proof |
